I want to buy a puppy

Good preparation helps you make an informed choice and begin life with a Cavalier with realistic expectations.

Making an informed choice for a healthy Cavalier

Important when buying a puppy abroad!

A puppy may only enter Belgium from the age of 15 weeks. The mandatory rabies vaccination may be given no earlier than 12 weeks of age. You must then wait at least 21 days before the puppy may cross the border.

Before buying, check that the puppy meets these legal requirements!

Buying a puppy

Bringing a puppy into your home is a serious matter!!!

Bear in mind that a puppy will turn your garden upside down. He will dig holes, eat flower bulbs and damage your plants.

Indoors, he will chew on your wooden furniture. He will add fringes to your carpets, bite your expensive new shoes, pull the tablecloth off the table and reshape any clothes left lying around. In the beginning, he will also still regularly relieve himself indoors.

On top of that, you will find hair everywhere, sometimes even on your plate!!

Your life will change completely for at least 10 years!

You will always have to take your dog into account: when you want to go out, spend a day away or go on holiday, you will always need to make arrangements for him!

Think carefully about whether you can really cope with all of this before you finally decide to give such a little creature a home.

The little dog literally places his life in your hands; you alone are responsible for his welfare.

That means you need to prepare properly for his arrival.

Never buy a dog on impulse!

Patience is essential.

With a serious breeder, there is always a certain waiting period.

Do not see this as a drawback, but use that time to prepare yourself as well as possible.

You can do this by reading suitable books.

You will also receive plenty of advice from the breeder, with whom you will be in regular contact from the time the puppy is born.

During the weeks when your puppy is still with his mother, you can prepare everything at home for his arrival.

A bed, crate, food bowl and water bowl.

You can already choose a permanent place for everything your dog will need.

And then, at last, the big day arrives!

The puppy will take over your home and garden, as well as your heart…

He will look at you as if you were God in person, and with his baby eyes he will completely win you over.

And when he is sleeping peacefully beside you on the sofa in the evening, you will know that you receive much more from him than you ever have to give him…

What should you look for when buying a Cavalier puppy?

  • You must see the mother. If you are not allowed to see the mother, never buy the puppy. As it grows older, a puppy will often show the character of its mother. It is also a right you have as a buyer. The Flemish kennel regulations state that “a buyer has the right to see the mother if he asks to do so”…
  • Visit the breeder and make sure that the litter is well cared for. You will very quickly notice whether you are dealing with a genuine, dedicated breeder or someone who breeds solely for financial gain. A genuine breeder talks about their animals with love. Be aware that a good breeder will also ask you questions to make sure that you are a suitable buyer. A breeder who puts a great deal of time and love into their puppies naturally wants them to go to good homes.
  • Check whether the breeder pays sufficient attention to the health of the parent dogs. You can read more about this in the health section of our website.
  • Finally, and very importantly, check whether the puppies are being properly socialised by the breeder. Puppies kept somewhere out of the way in a kennel can never receive enough stimulation, and this will affect them later in life. Poorly socialised dogs are often fearful, bark a great deal and frequently do not feel at ease. Ideally, a litter should be kept in the breeder’s living area, where the puppies are constantly exposed to sounds such as the television, radio and vacuum cleaner, as well as to people and other dogs in the home.

Never take your children with you on a first visit. A child’s heart always melts at the sight of a puppy, and afterwards it will be difficult for you to think rationally about whether or not you really want to buy a puppy from that breeder.
